We are not even talking about a clue but about an answer because you will have recognized the Clio, emblematic model of the Renault range, the best-selling brand in the world. No, the ranking made by the Twitter account (or X, should we say) Car Industry Analysis, owned by a certain Felipe Munoz working for the Jato firm, should not surprise you. However, because the latter was not content to list in order the most popular French manufacturers but all the car brands, there are many surprises in this long list.
Renault behind Tesla
Already, Renault, the French manufacturer that sells the most cars in the world, only comes in 16th position. In front of him, we find brands as diverse as Toyota (clearly ahead of all the others with more than 8.5 million copies sold last year), Volkswagen (2nd, with almost half as many vehicles sold as Toyota , 4.5 million) or the premium Germans (in order, BMW, Mercedes and Audi respectively 10th, 11th and 13th). More surprisingly, despite its young age and its less extensive range, Tesla is already doing better: 14th with 1,298,827 units sold against 1,138,459 copies.
Peugeot and Citroën follow
Peugeot, which is struggling to export outside of Europe, only comes in 22nd place. As for the total, it amounts to a far more reasonable than Renault’s 868,259 sales. For Citroën (38th), it is quite logically lower than the first two cities with only a little over 500,000 units sold, a performance lower than Dacia (34th): 572,405 models sold. Even MG whose revival is still recent has done better: 33rd with 582,604 copies. Long live the new C3!
DS in front of Alfa Romeo
Good last of our French brands, the DS brand (91st, ouch) has sold almost 10 times fewer vehicles than… Citroën. It can nevertheless boast of having sold more cars than Alfa Romeo, despite a lesser-known label. Or that Smart (106th, barely 30,000 units!) is only waiting for one thing, that the two SUVs #1 and #3 boost commercial results.
