The bet of electric mobility can only be won by boarding a maximum of motorists, including young people, mechanical enthusiasts, those who like to drive, backpackers who accumulate thousands of kilometers each month, and those without a fixed socket. . The year 2023 marks a real transition in the field. Ticket.
A new tone
This feeling of a change in the face of electromobilists in 2023 was born and grew over the interviews taken this year for the various Internet media with which I collaborate. By the way, how many real meetings or by phone since last January? Ladlely, I thought about fifty. I wanted to get to the bottom of it by counting them.
Since January 1, 2023, I have received and/or worked on 89 testimonials which have resulted in the publication of an article. I therefore do not count the few discussions in which I took part during the dozen reports and which did not give rise to a communication aimed at readers. With such a volume, no wonder the repetition of certain points became evident.
I take advantage of this post to thank all the interlocutors who trusted me: the degree of desire to transmit, of their enthusiasm and their sympathy, observed during our exchanges, was very much on the rise. To the point that the 20-30 minutes usually reserved for the interview have been largely exceeded, until regularly reaching the hour. You are awesome ! A big thank you also to the readers who welcomed all these testimonies.
Electromobilists more than 10 years ago
A decade ago and even further back, the main motivation of motorists who became pioneers of electromobility was essentially to moderate the impact of their journeys on the environment and public health. Their most often literature was the reports of international organizations.
For example, the WHO, which estimated, for example, that nearly 7 million people died prematurely on the planet in 2012 due to pollution, of which the transport sector was not the only cause.
Most of these electromobilists had agreed to be satisfied with the limited performance of electric cars with nickel cadmium batteries: 80 km of autonomy while being very light on the accelerator. It was then rarely a question of going on vacation with it, even if, like me, some did. In this sphere, there were already some enthusiasts of beautiful mechanics, most often retaining a more attractive vehicle for leisure.
The autonomy of electric cars, a non-issue?
The new wave of hipsters
Do not seek anything offensive on my part by reproducing this term ” bagnolard which several of my interviewees spontaneously used to refer to themselves. After all, myself passionate about old vehicles and enjoying driving a lot, I can also attribute myself this label which allows me to speak the same language as many of the new readers of Automobile Propre. This facilitates confidences.
A few years ago, those who liked the mechanics and noise of internal combustion engines – sporty or not – mainly saw the electric car as an enemy. Especially since Europe and the French government had already begun to direct them exclusively to her.
One of the novelties of 2023 is that for many lovers of mechanics, performance, and vroom-vroom, the connected automobile appears today as highly desirable, to the point of taking a very symbolic first step towards sustainable mobility. They do it with a smile and a lot of serenity. They go for Tesla Model Y, Volvo XC40 Recharge, Audi’s e-tron range, BMW i4, Kia EV6, etc. This current is extremely valuable in order to turn the page on thermals for daily trips, as for holidays.
Electric: a motorization like any other
Another observation: more and more motorists are choosing or abandoning the electric car in a totally uninhibited way, most often because of their changing needs. Thus leaving a diesel for an electric, then choosing a hybrid, keeping a total openness to the VE, for later.
A change of assignment, the absence of a personal means of recharging combined with a dissuasive increase in prices for access to public terminals, a birth and prices still too high for family electric models, obtaining a company car , etc., are among the causes most often cited by interviewees for pausing EV in their homes.
Here again, the connected vehicle is no longer seen as a black sheep, a constraint or an obligation, but as a convincing model in its own right and appreciated in a variety of engine technologies. It is also very encouraging, especially since the people concerned most often do so in a very peaceful way.
For many young motorists in their twenties, the diversity of motorization is not a subject: it is electric and nothing else! Even if they drive a diesel city car because of the still too high price of EVs, even second-hand.
From their first stable job, they do not hesitate to take advantage of all the advantages to become electromobilists: government bonus, premium for conversion to the maximum rate, LOA/LLD. It sometimes barely passes, but they often count on much lower expenses afterwards, concerning refueling, maintenance and insurance.
Also convinced by the benefits of carpooling, they find additional ways to make it possible to acquire a Renault Zoé or a Peugeot e-208.
Misconception: the electric car brings no pleasure
More and more households have switched to all-electric for their mobility. Until recently, we mainly encountered motorists who kept a petrol or diesel car next to their new electric one. It was most often to use the EV on a daily basis and from time to time the thermal vehicle for occasional long trips.
With the increase in range beyond the actual 300 kilometers and a national charging network that is expanding in particular thanks to new operators and major retail chains, the interest of keeping a petrol or diesel model fades away. A movement that is also favored by the good perception of electrics.
Why then keep a noisy, polluting, expensive to maintain car, where the mechanical gearbox appears so archaic in the face of new technologies embedded in EVs? Departures on vacation are even approached in a more relaxed way. There is of course the integration of the planners as an extension of the on-board navigation system which gives confidence. But also and above all the reliability and the number of charging stations at motorway rest areas.
Without fixed socket
This general deployment of terminals, which also affects urban and rural areas, now facilitates the adoption of electric vehicles by motorists without a means of personal recharging.
We have met several readers in this case who have found the right scenarios allowing them to drive an EV as easily as with a thermal model. It is sometimes in the workplace that it is possible to connect.
It is also by using all the opportunities available to them. The terminals in front of a sports hall, a cinema, a supermarket, etc. are thus used. The increase in prices for 22 kW AC in several departments and the time penalties even during recharging constitute a new brake, however.
