The 2008 Formula 1 season was arguably one of the most controversial. The CrashGate affair has been talked about a lot. For the first time in F1 history, the paddock traveled to Singapore to contest a night race under the floodlights. To recall the context, Felipe Massa is the leader of the championship, he is fighting for the title with a certain Lewis Hamilton. But during the Grand Prix, Renault prepared a machiavellian plan. Nelson Piquet causes an accident on the 14th lap of the race. The safety car entered the track and Fernando Alonso took the lead in the Grand Prix. Massa engulfed the pit for a supply. He took with him the gasoline nozzle hanging from the tank of his car. At the end of the championship, this incident cost him the title by only one small point. Hamilton therefore became champion for the first time in his career.
Major proceedings initiated
The former Brazilian driver wants to change the situation at all costs and hopes to win his case. According to his lawyers, Felipe Massa was the victim of a conspiracy. Former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has admitted to the media that he was aware of the affair. He did not want to return it to the general public, for fear of killing the image of F1 which was not attractive compared to today. After Ecclestone’s declarations, Massa immediately reacted and took great measures with important legal steps. He has appointed lawyers from Great Britain, Brazil, the United States, Switzerland and France.
“We will fight for the title. I’m here to make it clear that things didn’t happen fairly. I have nothing against Hamilton. This battle is about a race that was rigged [le GP de Singapour 2008]. This world title was ours, and it was taken away from us by manipulation. I think it’s important for us to fight for justice. We are fighting for the title, it is our fight and we will go all the way.” (Source: GE Brazilian site)
