Opponents of the A 69 motorway project between Toulouse and Castres are definitely ready to do anything to impose their point of view. Even to propose ideas that are surprising to say the least, even eccentric. Latest example with the idea of a… cycle route. Yes, you read that right: a cycle route, rather than a highway. Ideal for allowing motorists to save time on their journeys between these two cities, which is precisely the purpose of the motorway under construction.
In detail, this cycle route project, valued at 30 million euros, is based on a section of 87 kilometers. Their plan does not stop there. Opponents plead for a redevelopment of the RN 126, which connects Castres to Toulouse as well as for a revitalization of the rail offer. This is thanks to better timing and the installation of no less than five new stations!
This development plan has been called “another way” and has been costed at 100 million euros, against 450 million for the motorway. According to the collective La Voie est Libre, it would reduce road traffic on the national road by 25% and “to revitalize the whole territory”. It cannot be invented. Seven facilities would structure the cycle route, like a cycling city in Castres. An agricultural component would also accompany this investment.
Justice recently challenged opponents of the A 69
Remember that opponents of the A 69 motorway project between Toulouse and Castres have recently been challenged by the courts. The latter had indeed seized the administrative court of Toulouse, within the framework of a summary-suspension. The goal was to suspend the work urgently, before a judgment on the merits, which would take longer to take.
Still, justice ruled in favor of the site. The judges found in their verdict that there was no reason to suspend the project:
“None of the means [invoqués par les opposants] are not likely to give rise to serious doubts about the legality of the decree.” The motorway represents a “major public interest”, with “a time saving of around 20 minutes”, “a positive effect on safety road” or “an expected territorial rebalancing”.
This is why the opponents of the project have decided to appeal to the Council of State. They are still hoping for a suspension of the site, pending this famous judgment on the merits.
