In 2024, the bonus will be subject to an eco-score whose calculation is a gas plant. Bruno Le Maire would have liked to make it simpler.
Bruno Le Maire was yesterday (Tuesday August 29) at the Meeting of French Entrepreneurs (REF) organized by the Medef, a must for the Minister of the Economy. With him, he discussed in particular the economic competition between Europe, China and the United States.
He believes that the Old Continent can reach the first economic place and become with a model “carbon-free, fair, united, more enviable than the centralized Chinese model or the American model”. For Bruno Le Maire, it is important for Europe to defend its interests as quickly as possible: “ If we want the game to be played in the 21st century between the United States, China and Europe, and not in a dangerous face-to-face between the Chinese continent and the American continent, it is now that it is played.
And to better defend itself against competition, Europe must, according to our minister, change its rules: “ It is in our interest to hurry to change our standards, to simplify them and to promote European content if we want to counter the rise in the range of the Chinese”.
And he cites the French ecological bonus as an example. This will be reviewed in 2024, with an undisguised objective: to put a spoke in the wheels of electric cars from China. The government wants to reserve it for cars made in France and made in Europe.
But in order to be able to do so while respecting European rules, the executive has laid down an “eco-score” of great complexity. It determines the environmental balance sheet of the car, taking into account in particular the materials used, production or transport. The calculation is a hell of a gas plant for manufacturers, who will have to do it themselves.
Facing the bosses, Bruno Le Maire therefore pointed the finger at Europe: “ It’s quite complex. I would have preferred to be able to say, the European bonus is reserved for industrial products with European content. That’s what China is doing, that’s what the US is doing, that’s what I still can’t do in Europe because of European standards.”
