French tourists sometimes know how to get noticed abroad. Last example in date with a man, who spent his holidays in Sardinia. The man in question obviously enjoyed the beach… A little too much, even.
So much so that he tried to bring back no less than 41 kilos of pebbles from the beach of Lampianu, a place of recognized beauty. We do not know if he intended to open a museum dedicated to the beaches of Sardinia, but if so, he was off to a good start.
Still, his dream of bringing back kilos of rocks quickly fell through. Indeed, the beach from which these pebbles came is a protected place. When he intended to take the ferry from the port of Porto Torres, the latter was stopped by customs.
A big fine for this stone-loving tourist
The action committed by this tourist with these pebbles is indeed illegal. It is a theft, which can be punished by a fine ranging from 500 to 3,000 euros. It is indeed a violation of the law prohibiting the theft of sand shells and pebbles on the beaches of the Italian island.
A point on which the Italian authorities supported in a press release, to justify their decision. Surprisingly, this is not a first. Indeed, in 2019, a French couple (already) tried to bring back 40 kilos of sand from the beach of Chia in bottles. With the 41 kilos, our French tourist therefore beat them.
Note that this law also exists in France. It is indeed forbidden to steal sand from the beaches of France. A fine of 1,500 euros is even foreseen. Testifies to it public service websiteciting article L.321-8 of the Environmental Code:
“The extraction of materials […] are limited or prohibited when they risk compromising, directly or indirectly, the integrity of beaches, coastal dunes, cliffs, marshes […]“
