On the eve of the first tests of the Italian Grand Prix, it is certain that Lewis Hamilton will not put on the red suit of Scuderia Ferrari in the coming seasons.
At least until 2025
Indeed, the seven-time world champion will still be with Mercedes at the end of the 2023 financial year. His new contract covers at least two additional years, i.e. until 2025 inclusive. The year of his 40th birthday, Sir Lewis will therefore play his 13th consecutive season with the same team.
6 of his 7 titles with Mercedes
Crowned in 2008, at the wheel of the McLaren – with Mercedes engine – during his second in Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton then forged most of his prize list at Mercedes, with whom he was titled 6 times, in 2014, 2015 , 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. Since 2013, number 44 has won 82 victories and 78 poles there, three-quarters of its successes which constitute two absolute records, namely 103 victories and 104 poles.
George Russell is also returning
This Thursday, the star team announced the same extension for George Russell. Thus, the winner of the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix will continue to form a 100% British pair with his eldest, until at least 2025.
Lewis Hamilton’s reaction
“Every day we dream of being the best and we have dedicated the last ten years to achieving this goal. Being at the top does not happen overnight or in a short period of time, it takes commitment, hard work and dedication, and it was an honor to earn our place in the history books with this incredible team. We have never been more hungry for victory. We have learned from every success, but also from every setback. We keep chasing our dreams, we keep fighting no matter what the challenge, and we will win again. I am grateful to this team who supported me on and off the track. Our story is not over. , we are determined to achieve more together and we will not stop until we do.”
George Russell’s reaction
“I’ve grown with this team since I joined it as part of the Junior program in 2017. It’s my home and it’s fantastic to extend our special relationship until 2025. After stepping into the Mercedes last year, I wanted to reward the trust that Toto and the rest of the team had in me. Getting my first pole position and my first victory last year was an unforgettable feeling. More importantly, it was great to work with everyone at Brackley and Brixworth to progress with our car and drive our development forward. Their loyalty, vision and hard work are inspiring. We have achieved significant milestones over the past 18 months and we’re only going from strength to strength as a team. I’m excited to help build that momentum as we move forward into 2024 and 2025, while continuing to focus on getting back to the front of the pack.”
The reaction of Toto Wolff (Team Main)
“Continuing with our current line-up was a simple decision to make. We have the strongest pairing on the grid and both drivers play a crucial role in the team to keep us going. The strength and stability they provide will be key elements of our future success. Our partnership with Lewis is one of the most successful in the history of the sport. It was always a formality for us to continue together – and it is exciting for all of us to confirm this publicly His qualities as a pure racing driver are evident in his remarkable track record, but over our years together he has become a pillar and leader of our team. These leadership qualities are crucial as we refocus on the fight for the world championships. As the world’s biggest star in F1, he has also played a key role in shaping our commitments to diversity, inclusion and sustainability, which will be the foundations of our success in the years to come. George is a leading figure of his generation. He has rewarded the trust we have shown him by promoting him to starter status in 2022. His first pole position in Hungary and his first Grand Prix victory in São Paulo were defining moments last season. As a pilot, he combines blistering speed with the tenacity of a true fighter. But he also brings an intelligence and attention to detail that will help him continue to grow, develop and improve further. He fits naturally into the team and we are delighted to have extended this relationship for years to come.”
