Porsche plans to take great inspiration from his concepts for its future electric cars. The German manufacturer confirms that the Mission X and the Porsche 357 foreshadow its future.
Concept cars are often an opportunity for brands to test their ideas. The public can thus see the first sketches of future models and the manufacturer then gauges the reactions.
In the event of an outcry over the design, brands can backtrack. But in the case of Porsche and its recent concepts, public reception has validated the firm’s ideas.
The Porsche Vision 357 Speedster is a modern tribute to the mythical 356. As for the Mission X concept, it is the electric descendant of the 918 Spyder, which was a plug-in hybrid.
Ingo Scheinhütte, director of exterior design for Porsche models, spoke to Autocar on this subject. He explains that the two electric concepts actually foreshadow future styling cues for electric Porsches.
“You bring all the ideas to a concept, but you have to see how they develop” he indicates. “Certain elements are key to identifying our brand, such as the continuous light arch. »
“And on Mission X, we see an evolution of it. Instead of a simple light bar, the Porsche logo is now integrated into it. I’m sure that’s something we’ll see on production builds. »
“The two concepts are very different in their design. The 357 is a love letter to the original Porsche shapes. For its part, the Mission X is an evolution of the stylistic language of Porsche. »

Scheinhütte explains why Porsche will only take over elements of the overall design. It reveals that transposing the aesthetic solutions of a concept designed around them is difficult, when it comes to a model responding to a segment codified by technical requirements.
It also details how Porsche wants to evolve its aesthetic codes, while respecting its heritage. The objective is to be able to successfully transpose this to the future electric Macan, for example.
“The further you go into the sedan and SUV segment, the less you can play with 3D shapes. So sports cars are kind of the model that we try to take and adapt to our SUVs. »
“Some things work, some don’t. On the 357 there is a crease on the side, whereas Porsches are usually very round. This time around we tried to give it a bit of edge and angle, and even bring the angle around the whole car. I think we could apply that to our SUVs. »
“We asked ourselves what was the main characteristic of a shape and it is interesting to note that it was the headlights that were chosen. Ten years ago, I would have said that the most important exterior element on a Porsche was the headlights. »
