At 2:00 p.m. sharp, all the motorcycles left the starting grid for the race. The first corner was the scene of a big pileup. The Italian Enea Bastianini missed his braking and caused several riders to fall with him, including Johann Zarco. A turn later, it is a terrible scene that the spectators experienced. Francesco Bagnaia went highside at turn two, he landed right in the middle of the track and unfortunately Brad Binder couldn’t avoid him and rolled over his leg. The South African was in shock at the end of the Canal+ microphone race.
“The first start was very scary. I had a good start, everything was fine. When I came out of the second corner, I only saw Pecco’s (Bagnaia) bike. I tried to avoid it, but unfortunately…Luckily I only hit his legs and nothing else. But it was terrifying, it always is when one pilot crashes into another. It was a relief to see he was okay when I went to see him (after the race). It did me a lot of good. When you touch someone, you never know what the consequences may be.”
Following this accident, the Ducati rider was rushed to hospital. After several examinations, Bagnaia does not suffer from any cranial or thoracic lesion. It is a contained miracle of the violence of the images. Doctor Angel Charte, medical director of MotoGP, spoke about the state of health of Francesco Bagnaia to DAZN.
“Pecco is fine, he suffered a serious polytrauma. A motorcycle rolled over him, at the level of the femur and the tibia. We did an X-ray and we detected a small injury, which we don’t know if it is recent or old. We have to carry out an emergency scan, which will be carried out at the University Hospital of Catalonia. At the cranial and thoracic level, everything is normal. He always remained conscious and oriented. The image that we were able to see comes from a simple x-ray so it is difficult to be certain that there is no fracture. He has to pass a CT scan.”
