A few days before the opening of the Munich show where it intends to impress, the Chinese manufacturer announces a change of direction in terms of marketing. The slogan Build Your Dreams will disappear from vehicles sold in Europe.
BYD is beginning to learn from its first months in the European market, and intends to show that it listens to its customers. It would be both too conspicuous, but also too representative of the brand’s Chinese origins. Of which note, the vehicles will soon sport a simpler BYD logo.
The history behind the BYD name
It doesn’t matter, since in reality this translation of the letters BYD was only added very recently… When it was founded in 1995 by Wang Chuanfu, the company was called Yadi Electronics, because it was simply installed on Yadi Road in Shenzhen … Then, we add Bi to become Biyadi… and appear higher in the alphabetical lists of companies!
Vehicles sold in China still bear the name “比亚迪” Biyadi, which remains the legal name of the company… From Biyadi to BYD there is phonetically only one step, especially for the Chinese customer. In 2003, the BYD Flyer sports a logo close to that of BMW: two white and blue parts instead of four, and the letters are placed BYD at the bottom and not at the top. These letters are then not presented as an acronym.
The words Build Your Dreams will not appear until the mid-2010s. It is then only a slogan playing with the name of the brand, before being taken over officially as the meaning of the name BYD. These three words are affixed in full for the first time on a vehicle with the Tang in 2018…
