Zapping Auto Moto Fiat Topolino Dolcevita: on board the ultra trendy micro-city car
It’s an unappealing story reported to us by the weekly Current wife, about scammers now operating in the Territoire de Belfort, in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. The particularity of the latter is to use the technique of the broken mirror.
Witness an octogenarian victim of this misadventure in the town of Bessoncourt, on August 23. Quietly at the wheel, the latter hears a dull noise. He stops and then sees a car parked along the sidewalk. The latter has a broken mirror on the side of the road.
The octogenarian therefore imagines having broken the rear view mirror. He is quickly approached by a man who claims to be the owner of the damaged car. The latter asks him for his insurance papers and pretends to call an insurance agent, who moves quickly to assess the damage.
Amicable scam, with a broken mirror
The agent, an accomplice in the scam, then estimated the damage at a greatly exaggerated sum: 1,300 euros in this case. The opportunity for the crooks to then offer an amicable arrangement, reducing the price a little.
And the octogenarian to accept the situation and to withdraw the sum from a distributor, in order to give it to the crooks. What, he thinks, to avoid him a malus and a big expense, when it is in fact a scam.
The victim will finally talk about it to those around him and will decide to file a complaint. Still, proving that it is a scam is difficult. It is already a question of finding the crooks. No record of this money transfer also exists.
To avoid this kind of scenario, it is simply a matter of avoiding any oral agreement of this kind. It is better to draw up an accident report. It is also recommended to note the license plate of the other driver. Finally, it remains to take photos of the incident, of the place where it happened.
It is possible, as a last resort, to call the police in case of doubt as to a potential scam. Remember that this scam was also used at the beginning of 2022 in the Cher, then in Haute-Garonne at the beginning of the summer of 2023.
