Lexus’ large electric SUV received the famous 5 stars in the Euro NCAP crash test, but its adult protection score is a little disappointing.
Euro NCAP is slowing down in 2023! The organization which evaluates the safety of vehicles, by crashing them and testing their driving aids, is only on its third model rated this year. This is the Lexus RZ 450e, after the Nio EL7 and ET5.
Like the Chinese, the Japanese had the famous 5 stars, which are no longer so easy to obtain, Euro NCAP having made its rating more severe, particularly with regard to driving assistance. This point has also been further reinforced in 2023, which may complicate the comparison with the vehicles tested previously.
However, if the general average of the RZ is good, we note that the score in the main category, that of adult protection, is a little low, with 87%. The Nio ET5, for example, had 96%. The problem mainly comes from the protection of adults in the rear, the thorax being too much in danger. The score for frontal impact is thus 12.9 out of 16. However, it is very good for lateral impact (15.4 out of 16).

For the rest, nothing to complain about, the RZ is a good student, with for example a good 87% in child protection. Moreover, it’s even 24 out of 24 for the protection itself, the lost points corresponding to a lack of fixings for the car seats.
For the protection of vulnerable road users, the result is 84%, with a correct score for pedestrian impact. The emergency braking is to be commended, because it worked perfectly against pedestrians, cyclists and motorcycles. It also shone against cars, giving a score of 81% for safety equipment.
