A major specialist in contract automobile production, Magna Steyr is said to be in discussions with Chinese manufacturers, whose vehicles could be assembled in Graz.
Some manufacturers choose to entrust the production of their vehicles to subcontractors. In Europe, Magna is the best known and it already assembles a wide variety of vehicles in its Graz factory: Fisker Ocean, Mercedes G-Class and soon EQG, Jaguar i-Pace, BMW Z4, Toyota Supra. Advantage for manufacturers: not having to bear the investment of a new factory (case of Fisker) or not encumbering its own installations for lower volume models (the other manufacturers mentioned).
The list could soon expand. The Canadian group would thus be in discussions with one or more Chinese manufacturers to ensure the production of their vehicles in Europe. A new contract could make this project a reality.
The list of Chinese manufacturers present in Europe is long, and continues to grow. But it already seems reasonable to exclude candidates for production at Magna, MG and BYD. Two players with volume ambitions which justify a factory in their own name in the short term. Indeed, the contract production envisaged here applies mainly to smaller volumes. On the other hand, we can imagine Nio, Xpeng, Neta, Avatr, Voyah, Hongqi, Leapmotor…
