The latest electric Mini Cooper as well as the small Aceman SUV which will be launched in 2024 are currently exclusively planned with production in China. But that could change quickly.
To design its new generation of electric models for Mini, BMW turned to the Chinese group Greatwall. The electric Mini Cooper just presented at the Munich Motor Show as well as the small Aceman SUV which will arrive next year are based on a Greatwall platform. That of the Ora Funky Cat. And these vehicles are also assembled in China, in a factory of the Chinese partner, while the thermal version of the Cooper will leave the Oxford factory.
But the evolution of the market, the political and economic context seems to lead to a revision of this plan. The principle of producing these models exclusively in China is now being called into question and BMW could make announcements on this subject very soon.
Several hypotheses are on the table, production in Great Britain, or in Mexico in order to be able to offer these models on the North American market. For example, we could see the electric Cooper produced in Oxford alongside its gasoline sister, and the Aceman in Mexico. Michael Peyton, the boss of Mini for America, for his part clearly mentioned production in the region for one or the other of these two models.
The Countryman will remain produced in Germany.
