Electric cars on the Fremantle Highway narrowly escaped drowning. However, they are drinking the cup, a few weeks after the fire of the ship transporting them, in July off the coast of the Netherlands. This is evidenced by a video posted on the internet.
We see cars transported by the boat being unloaded on dry land. They are then immersed in a tank of water allowing them to be almost completely immersed. This is particularly visible with a Mercedes, which continues to emit light smoke… But numerous tanks indicate that a majority of cars are entitled to this treatment.
An impressive scene with the heavily damaged Fremantle Highway in the background. The latter in fact suffered a fire which destroyed most of it.
An astonishing maneuver to avoid fires
This astonishing maneuver aims to prevent a new fire. Indeed, electric car fires can smolder for a long time before breaking out and being discovered. Which can present a danger. This is why submerging these vehicles in water is a way to avoid most problems of this type.
Let us cite the example of firefighters who had to operate in this way in the United States, with a Tesla Model S. The latter caught fire several weeks after being deposited in a recycling center, following an accident. Ditto in the Netherlands, already, where firefighters had to drown a BMW i8 to put an end to a fire. A radical and effective technique, but which requires heavy resources.
Remember that the Fremantle Highway transported 3783 vehicles of various types, electric and thermal. It caught fire during the night of July 25 to 26 off the coast of the Netherlands, before being towed to safety on August 3. Some think that the fire was caused by electric cars, others by thermal cars. An investigation is underway into this matter.
