With the launch of its new iPhone 15 range, Apple marks a much more exciting renewal than that between the two previous models a year ago. Discover the new changes of this revolutionary smartphone which was unveiled on September 12 and which will be available from September 22.
The long-awaited arrival of USB-C
As expected, all iPhone 15 models (as well as the 2nd generation AirPods Pro) now come with a USB-C port. This transition is part of European Union standards, which aim to promote and impose the use of a universal charger for all manufacturers. Apple therefore chose to leave aside its Lightning port in favor of USB-C. This development offers several undeniable advantages. First of all, users in the Apple ecosystem can now charge their iPhone, iPad and Mac with a single cable, simplifying their daily lives. Additionally, this opens the door for Android smartphone accessories to be compatible with iPhone, expanding options for users.
A brand new and customizable Action button
Already introduced last year with the release of the Apple Watch Ultra, the long-awaited new action button will indeed replace the ringer/silent switch, present since the appearance of the first iPhone in 2007. Only the Pro and Pro Max integrate this new Action button which allows the iPhone to get even closer to its competitors.
Positioned on the left side of the device, in the location previously occupied by the switch, this new button is intended to allow the configuration of shortcuts to the most frequently used features. By pressing and holding this key, you will have access to a range of convenient options, including: Silent Mode, Focus Mode, Camera, Flashlight, Dictaphone, Translation, Magnifier, Shortcut, and Accessibility.
The iPhone 15 Pro with A17 Pro chip and AV1 video codec
Another notable change concerns the introduction of AV1 decoding thanks to the A17 Pro chip present in the iPhone 15 Pro. This is the first time that Apple has integrated this new video format, which is already widely adopted by platforms such as YouTube and Netflix, among others. AV1 is positioned as the next generation of content video format, aiming to replace both H.264 and H.265 HEVC. It is an open and free format that offers significantly superior video performance for streaming. However, it should be noted that Apple’s support is limited to AV1 decoding and does not include encoding.
