Do you know which is the best-selling small SUV in the world? No, these are not the Peugeot 2008, Renault Captur, or Volkswagen T-Roc, omnipresent in our European streets. He of Honda HR-V, much more discreet on our continent. 22 years after the “Joy Machine” with its angular lines – which was incidentally the prize intended for the winners of the Loft Story show – 8 years after a tortured and scarab-like HR-V II, here is a much softer machine. Right here, the surfaces are flat and the curves ample. There is Mazda or Citroën here (and for the better). We are far from the profusion of sheet metal lines, which now constitute the somewhat easy grammar of many manufacturers. Restful. The more so as the tilted roof or the tapered front optics energize this SUV of 4.34 m a little bigger than its European competitors. The louvred grille can be optionally colored like the bodywork.
The interior of this made in Japan machine particularly seduced us. Certainly, some plastics remain questionable. But it emerges a peaceful and bright atmosphere aboard the HR-V. Very horizontal, the dashboard offers a modern design. The ventilation has been particularly neat: a small knob placed on the aerators allows the flow to be redirected to the front or rear seats in a single gesture. The central console is overhung by a 9-inch touch screen. The software is the same as on the Honda e and Jazz. The menus are linked clearly, even if we will have appreciated more liveliness at the time of calculations.
On the other hand, rotary selectors allow you to adjust the air conditioning, a small lever engages the gears, a button allows you to choose the driving modes … By wisely mixing modern instruments and controls of all time, the HR-V makes you feel at home in terms of ergonomics. Moreover, visibility from the control station is excellent: the slightly elevated position allows traffic to be overlooked, while the flat bonnet clearly delineates the contours during maneuvering. The XXL retro equipped with a blind spot detector make driving safer.
The front passenger, on the other hand, is placed very high. Above all, he cannot adjust his position… The fuel tank is in fact placed under the buttocks of the front passengers, in order to free up space for the famous “magic seats” specific to Honda: the rear seat rises vertically, leaving a minimum distance. flag worthy of a Renault Kangoo. Convenient for carrying a green plant upright.
Once the bench is back in place, we find ourselves stretching our legs freely. L’knee room is skodaesque and unheard of on an SUV of this format. With its very domed saddle, fifth place is, on the other hand, not advisable except for breakdown assistance. Other (small) quack: the trunk capped at 320 liters with five passengers, against 377 for a Toyota Yaris Cross, however much shorter than this Honda. It still has the advantage of being flat when you fold the bench seat and having storage under the floor.
Quiet in town
We take off in silence. By default, the thermal block only turns on very rarely – and smoothly – when driving in the city, in order to fill the small battery. As on the Jazz, transmission point on this HR-V: the electric motor brings its torque at low speed. Then, once the 70 km / h bar is crossed, the movement from the heat engine is transmitted directly to the wheels via a fixed pinion. In town, it’s very silky. On the motorway, it’s less pleasant with a 1.5-liter not immediately at the rendezvous when you “put on the shoe” with simulated reports (this avoids the chewing gum effect of CVTs) and a not very pleasant grunt.
Too bad, because in daily driving, the HR-V seduces with its softness, underlined by the good quality of damping: the suspensions absorb blackcurrants well at low speed. And the large travel granted at high speed make it a more peaceful comrade than sporty in the long curves modeled by the eruptions of Vogelsberg (central Germany). The steering is kind of smooth but unfortunately a little taciturn in dynamic driving. The HR-V also insulates you perfectly against road noise and wind… even when you are close to maximum speed on Autobahn. During our mixed loop (city, road, highway), the HR-V consumed only 6.5 liters / 100 kilometers without our having practiced eco-driving. A light foot and predominantly urban driving will undoubtedly bring you below the 5-liter mark.
A reasonable value which excuses a purchase price a little higher than its rivals. But SUV is better equipped than its entry-level and production rivals with automatic air conditioning, adaptive cruise control, front / rear parking sensors, rear view camera or heated seats. In addition, the Japanese brand has confidence in the reliability of its SUV with a 3-year global warranty, 8 years for the battery and even 10 years for the heat engine. With this machine, Honda intends to win 70% of new customers. Softness often works better than constraint.
