If you’ve already watched the video above, know that no, it’s not my habit to go on mysterious dates by invitation via anonymous text message. But maybe my acting, barely worthy of a third AB Production role from the heyday — the one who pretends to chat in the background of a scene in the cafeteria — had already put you on notice. chip in the ear. It is indeed a good-natured production which these enthusiastic big children who are our television colleagues were particularly keen on. The reality was quite different and much simpler.
As is often the case, it all started with a phone call from a very well-known person coming from the head of the Skoda press department. The statement is as simple as it is concise: “We provide you with a budget for a car, parts and labor and you do a retrofit”. And ? ” And that’s all “. No particular rule, no procedure to follow, no compulsory passage? “Just achieving a range of 180 km. But otherwise you do what you want.” And, slipped in just before hanging up: “Ah, just one final detail: we proposed the same thing to Turbo and your finished projects will be put into competition and decided by a jury. Good evening ! “.

Thirty minutes later, with the phone still glued to my ear and my eyes wide and lost in space, I finally came out of my torpor. The brain blue screen disappears and the hard drive starts to scratch again. Let’s take a breath. What is needed is method, a to do list essential steps so as not to forget anything. In order, or even simultaneously, it is therefore necessary:
- Find a technical partner
- Find a Skoda Octavia produced between 1959 and 1971, preferably a Combi station wagon
- Find the parts for the retrofit
- Carry out renovation work undoubtedly necessary
- Bring our touch to make the car even more fun
That’s the main points. But we also need specifications. The open field that Skoda leaves us is as exhilarating as it is dizzying. Here again, it is appropriate to take a step back. The term certainly seems a little pompous, but we must attribute to this project an authentic philosophy which corresponds to that of our media, by determining what we want and what we refuse to find in the finished product. And this is what will write the technical sheet. For example, do we want a dragster ready to grind down the asphalt or an efficiency monster? A drift machine or a streamlined machine to cut through the air? The possibilities are limitless.

This is all well and good, but getting to the end of the project is only part of the challenge. It’s also about beating the opponent who is, whether you like it or not, a French reference in terms of automobiles. Cyril Drevet and Etienne Bruet between them have decades of experience in everything that rolls and as such have an extraordinary culture in the field. And that’s without mentioning obvious connections with diverse and varied professionals ready to lend them a hand in exchange for visibility on a national channel without this affecting the initial investment identical to ours. Let’s remain lucid: we are heading straight towards a duel like David against Goliath, pot of earth against pot of iron, arthouse film against Hollywood blockbuster, FC Melun against Real Madrid, small country inn against Michelin star. Or maybe just website versus television?
