Tesla is in the sights of the EEOC, the American federal agency responsible for compliance with labor law. Reproaches concerning cases of racist harassment in the Fremont (California) factory are made to the manufacturer. Heavy accusations, since the agency even filed a complaint this Thursday, September 28, against Tesla.
In detail, the first accusations of racism date back to‘”at least 2015″. Employees were regularly victims of insults. They were thus described as “singe”of “boy” or even referred to by the “N-word” (a derogatory term for black people). The EEOC detailed the criticisms made against the manufacturer in a press release:
Tesla “violated federal law by tolerating widespread and ongoing racial harassment of its Black employees and subjecting some of its workers to retaliation for opposing the harassment.” “Insults were used casually in busy areas.”
It could even go further, with graffiti or even threats:
“Black employees routinely encountered graffiti, including variations of the ‘N-word,’ swastikas, threats, and nooses, on desks and other equipment, in restrooms, in elevators, and even on new vehicles coming off the production line.”
Tesla soon forced to change its practices?
The authorities sought to reach an agreement with Tesla, in order to improve things. Alas, it didn’t work out. Reason for which a legal complaint is organized. This is in order to obtain damages for the victims and salary arrears. It is also about forcing the American company to change its practices.
Remember that this Tesla factory had already been accused in February 2022 by the State of California, regarding this same factory. State authorities filed a complaint “after receiving hundreds of complaints from workers (…) of racial segregation”.
Tesla, which has not yet commented on the EEOC complaint, responded to these accusations in 2022. The company assured to oppose “firmly stands against all forms of discrimination and harassment”. She also recalled having “a dedicated employee relations team to respond and investigate all complaints”.
