Did Jean-Luc Mélenchon have the solution to bring down fuel prices? Still, the leader of France Insoumise believes that by following his recommendations, prices at the pump would not be as high as currently.
In the past, the former presidential candidate had proposed blocking prices “and margins”. A measure similar to that which we already found “for masks and hydroalcoholic gel” for the latter. If this had been applied, the situation would not be the same today, he declared on RMC and RMC Story, during the program Les Grandes Gueules, this Friday:
“The oil companies have decided to reduce production. We warned a few months ago but no one reacted.” “At the time, there was a parade. I proposed that we block the prices and try to block them in Europe.”
“If we had blocked prices for the 450 million European consumers, oil producers would have been forced to lower prices to increase the quantities sold.”
The price of fuel is political
Jean-Luc Mélenchon also affirms that the price of fuel is political. “It’s a 100% political price. It has nothing to do with the quantities of oil available and that can be distributed.” This is understandable, when we know that demand always increases but that production follows behind.
As evidenced by Olivier Gantois, president of the French Union of Petroleum Industries (Ufip). Recently interviewed by us, the latter recalled that “the world will consume around 103 million barrels per day. This increases by one to two million barrels per day each year. The context is a very strong and growing demand for petroleum products, which is not likely to calm the costs.”

To sum up
Jean-Luc Mélenchon calls for a freeze on prices and margins in order to lower fuel prices at the pump. He recalls that he had already mentioned such measures in the past, without them being taken up. According to him, these solutions could already have had positive effects on prices.
