For several months, the MG4 has been ahead of the Megane in the ranking of electric car sales in France.
You can take out the champagne in the MG France offices. The French subsidiary aimed to sell 20,000 cars over the entire year. This goal was achieved at the end of September! Since January, the Chinese manufacturer has registered 20,827 cars with us, an increase of 219% compared to 2022!
The company experienced a record return, registering 3,435 cars in September, representing a market share of 2.1%. The brand is driven by electric cars. Moreover, in September, it was the 3rd player in the electric vehicle market. One in ten electric cars sold last month was an MG.
Obviously, this explosion in counters is to the credit of the MG4, the electric compact at knockdown prices, which arrived in showrooms in the fall of 2022. It alone represents a little more than half of MG sales . Since January, the manufacturer has delivered 12,199.
Faced with the MG4, the Renault Megane in turmoil?
It thus ranks 7th in the electric market, doing significantly better than models which have more notoriety, such as the Renault Zoé (4,752 sales), the Peugeot 2008 (3,872) or the Volkswagen ID.3 (3,574).
Above all, it is hot on the heels of the Renault Megane. Over the first nine months of the year, the French version sold 12,649 copies. There is therefore less than 500 units difference with the Chinese. And the latter is gradually closing the gap. At the end of the first half, the gap was close to 2000 cars in favor of the Megane (9,488 against 7,573).
In September, the MG sold much better with 1,945 units compared to 1,372 for the Megane. And the MG has been ahead for several months. In August, 1,598 were registered, compared to only 791 Megane. In July, the Chinese was at 1,083, compared to 998 for the Megane.
While it is already attracting attention with its tight prices, which start excluding bonuses at €29,990, MG has hit hard by offering an LLD offer at €99 per month (over 24 months).
In a press release, Julien Robert, director of the network, declared: “MG’s strength is to enable those who have been excluded from the new vehicle market in recent years to benefit from the latest technologies and access electric mobility with prices in line with the purchasing power of the French. As proof, more than 900 people have already benefited from our social leasing offer at €99/month since its launch on July 1.”
The rest of the career, however, risks becoming complicated for the MG4, which should be deprived of bonuses in 2024 because of the eco-score.
