They are scientists and more than 1,500 of them are sending an open letter to the President of the Republic on October 4. The subject concerns the A 69 motorway project, which should connect Toulouse to Castres. And all the signatories of the letter, published in Obs, are naturally against the latter.
They simply argue that “The A 69 is one of those projects that must be abandoned.” We admit (that) certain projects remain necessary. But not this one. Neither the intensity of traffic nor the time savings envisaged on the Toulouse-Castres journey justify the construction of a motorway., they estimate. Even though the courts have repeatedly affirmed the opposite.
It is not too late
The signatories of the platform also declare to Emmanuel Macron that“It is not too late”. “The construction of this highway was approved under your previous mandate. It is your responsibility to reverse this decision. Pretend that it is too late” relieving “a denial of urgency of the situation”.
“Stopping now means greatly limiting the number of old trees cut down, fertile agricultural areas permanently lost, wetlands terraced and asphalted (…) it means avoiding the CO2 emissions associated with the construction of the infrastructure and those caused every year by higher speed traffic.” “To stop now would be a great mark of wisdom.”
The signatories conclude by recalling to count on the “lucidity”the “courage” and the “determination” of the president to preserve the habitability of the country and the planet.
The breach opened by Clément Beaune
The latter also take the opportunity to call for reducing the maximum speed on motorways to 110 km/h. A project abandoned by the government, in the face of the outcry that this logically caused for motorists.
The fact remains that they are rushing into a breach recently opened by Clément Beaune. This September 26, on France Interthe Minister Delegate in charge of Transport recalled that he “There are several (road) projects that will be stopped”. The fact remains that the delegate minister had supported the A 69 motorway project at the same time:
“This project has been the subject of many political and judicial decisions (…) I hear that some are opposed to the project.” “But when the elected officials confirmed it, when the State confirmed it, when there were more than 10 suspensive appeals served before the judge, we must move forward.”

To sum up
More than 1,500 scientists call on Emmanuel Macron to abandon the A 69 motorway project between Toulouse and Castres in an open letter. There is no justification for creating this infrastructure, they argue, especially in times of climate change.
