An essential element for the proper functioning of the engine, the timing belt is sensitive to wear and must be changed regularly. Auto-Moto explains everything to you.
It is without a doubt the most essential part of the engine. it’s about the timing belt, which can also be notched or trapezoidal, depending on the model. But anyway, they all have a common overall operation, since their role is to ensure the connection between the crankshaft, the water pump, the injection pump and the camshafts, while ensuring by elsewhere the synchronization between the valves and the pistons. Suffice to say that it is of an important capital so that everything that is under the hood works well, and that the slightest grain of sand in this well-oiled mechanism can have serious consequences. Because if the belt comes loose, deforms or breaks, it is the engine breakage insured, resulting in heavy operations and an exorbitant cost. Fortunately, it is possible to avoid such problems by regularly changing your timing belt, in order to reduce the risks. So how do you know when it’s time to go to the garage? Don’t panic, Auto-Moto gives you some wise advice.
When to change your belt?
Unlike tires or pads, it is difficult to know the precise condition of the timing belt from a visual examination, since it is installed inside the engine. But you should know that this is generally changed every five to ten years, this period varying then depending on the make and model of the vehicle, the number of kilometers traveled or the material of the belt. The ideal is still to refer to the vehicle booklet, which gives you precise information relating to the car you own. Thus, you will limit the risks of making a mistake which could be fatal to the mechanics. But to give you a range, be aware that the change is generally made every 60,000 to 160,000 kilometers, although diesel engines tend to have a lower replacement frequency.
Belt change, how much does it cost?
Before you embark on a belt change at home, in order to save money, you should know that this operation requires some mechanical knowledge and is not within everyone’s reach. A poorly carried out installation can indeed cause significant damage, it is best to entrust your vehicle to a professional. You should also know that by changing the belt, we mean in fact the change of the timing kit, which includes the belt, of course, but also the tensioner roller and the idler roller. The price of this operation then varies depending on your car and the garage you have chosen, and can then vary between 400 and 800 €. A relatively high amount but which is nothing compared to the price of changing an engine, which can greatly exceed € 2,500, or even € 4,500 for a high-end vehicle.
