Polestar doesn’t joke about the carbon footprint of its models. The manufacturer has just confirmed that the 4 would be the vehicle with the lowest impact on the environment. The Scandinavian brand’s large SUV coupe produces only 19.4 tonnes of CO2 over its entire lifespan, including production.
The Polestar 4, an environmental champion?
The Swedish company publishes “ life cycle analysis » for each of its models since its beginnings. This is a crucial element in Polestar’s strategy, which wants to minimize the impact of its electric cars on the environment.
Manufactured at Geely’s Hangzhou Bay factory in China, the Polestar 4 has an exceptionally low carbon footprint. It is even the model with the lowest carbon footprint of the brand’s entire range. Better than models 1, 2 and 3.
It must be said that the production site operates on both solar energy and hydroelectric energy. Enough to reduce the energy impact of the production of the model, not to mention the new production techniques deployed within this factory, including low-carbon aluminum. The future competitor to the Porsche Macan therefore has good ecological arguments.
A lower carbon footprint than the Spring
Over its entire life cycle, the entry-level Polestar 4 produces 19.4 tonnes of CO2. This is 19.9 tonnes for the model with the large battery and 21.4 tonnes for the version with two motors. This is better than for the small ID.3 which produces around 32 tonnes of CO2 throughout its life. Or even the Mégane E-Tech and its 28 tonnes of CO2. However, it is quite close to the emissions produced by the Dacia Spring. The model emits 21 tonnes of CO2 throughout its life cycle.
According to Fredrika Klarén, Head of Sustainability at Polestar, “ To achieve our zero emissions goal, we have established carbon budgets for all our cars. Throughout the development of the Polestar 4, its carbon budget influenced everything from the choice of materials to the energy sources used in the factory ».
How Polestar wants to be profitable by 2025
For such a large high-end model and with such scale, it’s quite exceptional. The 4 is almost 5 meters long and has a 94 kWh battery (net capacity). The electric model develops 268 hp or 537 hp in the twin-motor version. The Polestar will first be sold in China, then arrive in Europe around spring 2024.
