The beginning of November was marked by the release of a new Beatles single, “ Now and then », made possible by the exploitation of artificial intelligence (AI) technology developed by the team of director Peter Jackson. This made it possible to perfectly isolate John Lennon’s voice in an original recording long considered unusable.
The British quartet are not the only ones to exploit such technology. For the recent reissue of Nirvana’s Utero album, the same AI technology was used to isolate each instrument. The mixing was thus carried out from each separate track. “ We were able to get a really good mix this way “, said Krist Novoselic, ex-bassist of the legendary group.
Publish unreleased demos from the group
In passing, Novoselic hinted that he wanted to use various tracks recorded by the group but which have never been made public, using AI to help complete certain demos.
What does the band’s other survivor, drummer Dave Grohl, think? Novoselic explained that he would talk to him about it, as well as to guitarist Pat Smear who replaces Kurt Cobain on current tours. Novoselic referenced the new Beatles song to justify such an approach.
Novoselic himself sets a limit: he would refuse to exploit AI technology if the songs resulting from such treatment do not “sound” like the group around 1994. “ Kurt Cobain is no longer with us, so we have to do things right. »
Sign of the times: Harvey Mason Jr, the organizer of Grammy Awards indicated that from now on, songs generated with the help of AI could be rewarded as early as 2024!
