Engine oil: when to change?

Being part of the essential maintenance, the oil change must be done regularly. But how often? We tell you everything.

This is undoubtedly one of the most common actions in terms of maintenance. Essential for the proper functioning of the engine, the oil change allows you to replace the used oil with a new one, but also to remove the impurities in it, so that the various parts of the engine are always well lubricated. An oil that is too old risks damaging the mechanics, which then no longer plays its role of lubricant for the various parts. It is therefore essential to change the oil on a regular basis, and to take the opportunity to change the oil filter, in order to start again on a healthy basis. But precisely, when should we do our oil change? Is there a universal frequency? We tell you everything.

Depending on the make and model

We tell you right away, no, there is no comprehensive answer. Indeed, the oil change frequency depends on the make and model of your vehicle, but also on your use. Depending on whether you drive a lot on the highway or on the contrary whether you only make short trips, this will then influence the frequency with which you will have to change your engine oil. If you drive “normally”, an oil change once or twice a year will be sufficient. If you regularly drive at high speeds or if your engine is very old, then your best bet is to make two to three changes per year.

In terms of kilometers, manufacturers generally recommend an interval of 15 to 20,000 kilometers, where mechanics speak more of 7 to 10,000 kilometers. On the other hand, if you have a diesel, the best is to do it every 7,000 kilometers, this type of engine then requiring more care and maintenance.
