Zapping Auto Moto Alpine A110 MP-RC test: a real racing car at a good price?
Announced in November as a teaser, the Lucid Gravity becomes reality at the Los Angeles show. The American manufacturer’s electric SUV arrives some time after the marketing of the large Air sedan, while the brand seems in financial difficulty and is struggling to get its sales off the ground. To hope to sell more vehicles, Lucid plans to attack the Tesla Model X, BMW iX and other Kia EV9s with several arguments, including an astonishing front trunk that transforms into a bench seat for two people!
Under the front hood, due to the electric motor, there is room for a large trunk (a “frunk”) with a wide and very hollow opening. This allowed the manufacturer to install a small bench seat for two people, and even cup holders on each side. An invention that is, after all, not very useful in everyday life…
Not surprisingly, the style of the Gravity is in the vein of that of the Air sedan. The dimensions are also generous with 5.04 m long, but Lucid announces a very correct Cd of 0.24. Thanks to its XL size and its rather well-designed platform dedicated to electric power, the Gravity can carry 7 passengers and their suitcases in a very good level of comfort. Lucid announces a trunk volume of 3,172 liters when the second and third row seats are folded, transforming the SUV into a real mover.
The interior is slightly different from that of the Air, with instrumentation placed higher up and a small flat steering wheel, reminiscent of the Peugeot i-Cockpit. The OLED panel installed in the upper part measures 34 inches and is slightly curved. It displays driving information on the left side and navigation on the right side. A second 12.6-inch screen allows you to control the car’s various functions such as air conditioning or driving modes. Lucid specifies that the rear seat in the second row is sliding to arrange the space as the passengers see fit.
More than 700 km of autonomy announced
The electric machinery seems to be taken from the Air, with two motors offering a combined power of more than 800 hp, and a 0 to 100 km/h claimed in nearly 3.5 seconds. The SUV should be able to tow up to 2,700 kg, an important point for the American market. The size of the battery is not clearly indicated, but Lucid takes a dig at its competitors who equip their models with batteries that are too large (hello Cadillac Escalade iQ and its 200 kWh pack!). The battery should be around 113 kWh as for the sedan. The electrical architecture, still 900V, allows very rapid recharging (320 km recovered in 15 minutes) thanks to a power of 350 kW on a fast terminal. The range is announced at 440 miles, the equivalent of 708 km on the American EPA cycle.
For the moment, Lucid mentions a price below $80,000 in the United States for the entry level, without saying more about the construction of the range and the equipment. Production of the SUV will begin at the end of 2024, but interested customers can already express their interest on the brand’s website.
