Unveiled several months ago, the MG Cyberster was officially launched at the Guangzhou show. Its starting price has just been revealed: the Chinese will have to pay the equivalent of 41,000 euros for the basic version. The price for the European market is not yet known.
Chinese price: between 41,000 and 46,000 euros
Unveiled for the first time at the Goodwood Festival in July, then presented at the Chengdu motor show in August and in Munich in September, the MG Cyberster is finally available to order. At the Guangzhou show, the second largest automobile event in China, the 100% electric convertible caused a sensation. The British brand said it had already received 1,000 blind orders in around fifty days. While customers did not know its price.
We now know that the Chinese will have to pay between 319,900 to 359,800 yuan (between 41,000 euros and 46,000 euros) to afford it. Owned since 2005 by the Chinese automobile giant SAIC, the MG brand wanted to honor tradition and its history with convertibles. However, the equation is not so simple with rechargeable models. If few manufacturers risk marketing a real electric convertible, there is a reason.
Why are electric convertibles so rare?
Indeed, specialists on the subject believe that the design of convertible electric cars is extremely complex on a technical level. Particularly for convertibles equipped with four seats. It’s necessary ” more batteries to compensate for the extra weight of the convertible mechanism and more structural rigidity “. In 2023, 100% electric convertible projects are very rare. The design of such models represents “ a major challenge » for car manufacturers.
Mini finally launches the electric convertible, but there won’t be one for everyone
Despite everything, the MG Cyberster may soon have some competitors: Maserati is working on the GranCabrio Folgore, for example. The Swedish Polestar is preparing the launch of the Polestar 6, a 100% electric convertible whose design is particularly successful. The manufacturer already mentions a power of 650 kW and a torque of 900 Nm. That’s no joke. Fisker also plans to release an electric roadster. But for the moment, none of these models have officially seen the light of day. Except the Tesla Roadster, but can we really talk about a convertible?
The MG Cyberster comes in three versions
The 100% electric Chinese convertible therefore currently has a boulevard ahead of it. The Cyberster will be manufactured by SAIC in China, most likely in the Ningde factory, where the MG4 electric hatchback is assembled. This large roadster measures 4.5 meters long, 1.9 meters wide and 1.3 meters high. It is equipped with quite impressive scissor doors and three different engines: RWD 501, RWD 580 and AWD 520. In its “ best » configuration (RWD 580), the convertible can reach a range of 580 km.
The most powerful version of the MG Cyberster, the special edition AWD 520 (visible in the photo of this article, with a red roof), allows it to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds. The convertible is equipped with two motors which combine 400 kW (150 kW at the front and 250 kW at the rear) and a torque of 725 Nm. This version can theoretically cover 520 km and costs around 46,000 euros. In its basic version (the RWD 501), the Cyberster develops 231 kW, a torque of 475 Nm and can cover 501 km.
The brand specifies that the convertible roof is capable of opening in 10 seconds at less than 50 km/h. Inside the car there is a rather unusual screen focused on the driver. A large steering wheel with three spokes. No yoke steering wheel on the horizon, unless it is offered as an option in the future. The model is not as minimalist as one might have imagined. There are many buttons on the center board. Finally, the on-board computer is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip.
