Two models are competing for first place in the ranking of the best-selling cars in Europe (all engines combined). These are the Dacia Sandero and the Tesla Model Y. Over the first ten months of the year, they are in a pinch.
Model Y can still win the race
The Tesla Model Y was on track to achieve an incredible performance: to be the best-selling model in Europe this year, all engines combined. Unheard of for an electric vehicle. He was thus champion in the first half. But a car of a completely different type has not said its last word: the Dacia Sandero.
In October, the Dacia Sandero was well ahead of the Model Y with 21,139 new registrations. Compared to only 9,660 for the large Tesla model. As a result, between January and October 2023, 184,088 examples of the Dacia Sandero were registered on the Old Continent, compared to 183,799 registrations for the Model Y!
Tesla produces fewer Model Ys than expected in Berlin
The two models are neck and neck and the electric SUV is not missing much to regain the lead in the ranking. If the October figures may suggest that demand is collapsing for the Model Y, this is not necessarily the case. Surprisingly, American vehicle sales are always lower during the first month of a quarter than during the last two months.
An increase of 142% for the Tesla star
A theory that was verified throughout 2023: in the months of January and July, the figures were not exceptional. On the other hand, the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling vehicle in the months of February, March, May, June, August and September. Enough to predict good performances in November and December.
Testimonial – Why Francis went from the MG4 to the Tesla Model Y for his first electric car
On the podium behind the Sandero and the Model Y, we find the Volkswagen T-Roc with 164,833 registrations over the first ten months of the year. Then the Peugeot 208 with 163,672 units sold, and the Renault Clio with 154,493 sales. The growth of the Model Y is dazzling in 2023. Sales increased by 142.3% (from 75,854 to 183,799 units).
The rise of the Tesla Model Y is impressive. In just a few months, the SUV has become the favorite family vehicle of the French and the best-selling model in the world in the first quarter of 2023, a first for an electric vehicle. Elon Musk did not lie to his shareholders. The brand’s boss had promised them that the Model Y had the potential to become a bestseller. Accustomed to his hazardous statements, they had not particularly paid attention to this one, and yet. This breakthrough in sales is, in my opinion, proof that electric cars are becoming massively popular among consumers. First place on the European market in 2023 would be great recognition for the Model Y.
