Passing the Motorcycle Theoretical Test is necessary to obtain a motorcycle license, which is compulsory for driving a 2-wheeler.
Motorcycle Theoretical Test: how to pass it?
Motorized 2-wheel vehicles are regulated by law as are 4-wheeled vehicles. In France, driving a motorcycle can only be done with the possession of a motorcycle license (A, A1, A2 and B). In order to obtain the motorcycle license, it is imperative to pass the Motorcycle Theoretical Test or ETM. This examination of the Highway Code is specialized for 2 wheels. Since March 1, 2021, passing the ETM is compulsory for all those who wish to obtain a motorcycle license. This rule also covers people who have already passed the Car Code or ETG.
L’ETM is based on a composition of approximately 800 questions which are divided into 9 themes:
- The road ;
- Road traffic;
- The driver ;
- The other users;
- Various notions;
- mechanics and equipment;
- Protective equipment;
- The environment ;
- First aid.
When taking the ETM, you will have to answer 40 questions that relate to these topics. The validation of the ETM will only be done if you obtain at least 35 points.

It is important to note that the motorcycle license to be passed must be suitable for the size and power of the motorcycle you wish to ride.
The documents required for driving a 2-wheeler
The ETM is an official exam that you must pass at an approved center run by an operator selected by the state. Once you have obtained the ETM, you will have to take the practical motorcycle driving test to validate your motorcycle license.
However, the motorcycle license is not the only document necessary for driving a 2-wheel vehicle. Indeed, other documents are necessary in order to drive legally.
In order to drive a 2 wheeler, you must be in possession of a vehicle registration certificate or registration certificate. The gray card serves as the vehicle’s identity card. Indeed, the gray card contains all the important information relating to the vehicle as well as to the driver. This document is necessary for the identification of the vehicle or its owner.
Another essential document for driving a motorcycle legally is motorcycle insurance. Motorcycle insurance uses the same principle as car insurance. Motorcycle insurance guarantees the reimbursement of certain costs in the event of an accident. You can make your choice of motorcycle insurance based on the offers that match your profile and your needs.
