There are races that mark a generation. While the last Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will undoubtedly be the talisman of today’s young Formula 1 fans, the 1989 Japanese Grand Prix was in its time an inexhaustible source of discussion.
That day, Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna, competed for the lead of the race and especially the title of world champion. And that day the two McLaren-Honda collided a few laps from the finish.
At 47e lap of the Suzuka circuit, Ayrton Senna dove inside the Casio chicane to overwhelm his teammate and keep his chances in the championship. The French closed the door. Tangled like two deer having stuck their antlers, the two cars ended their race in the loophole.
Prost immediately left the scene. Pushed by the commissioners, Ayrton Senna set off again, replaced his front fins in the pits, overtook the new leader – Alessandro Nannini – and won the race. Until his disqualification for having cut the chicane when leaving the scene of the incident. Alain Prost was declared world champion in 1989.
A controversial conclusion that generated months of discussion on the responsibilities of the two pilots.
In the fall of 2021, a Youtube user posted a new video of the incident. The images were taken by photographer Paul-Henri Cahier on Twitter.
If you were still wondering who was responsible in Suzuka 1989, well, wonder no more.
Amazing stuff, not seen before.https://t.co/4wEiZhhgmf– Paul-Henri Cahier (@ F1Photo) January 4, 2022
This is a slow motion of the collision between the two single-seaters, filmed from a camera placed at the top of the grandstand located at the entrance to the pit straight line of the Suzuka circuit. At the time, the production of Fuji TV – which “watered” the whole world – did not broadcast these images during its live of the Grand Prix.
Senna is on the left of the picture, Prost on the right.
Your turn to judge…
