The all-new generation of Duster is offered with a hybrid unit. On the other hand, electric is not at all on the agenda.
Dacia has just lifted the veil on the third generation of the Duster. It is the first electrified. In addition to a mild hybrid unit, the SUV will offer a “truly” hybrid offer. This was expected, after the launch of the hybrid Jogger. This version already represents a quarter of sales of the large station wagon.
The next step is of course all-electric. Some people are already dreaming of such a Duster, which would allow them to have an electric family SUV at a knockdown price! But that’s not going to happen any time soon! Asked about this, Denis Le Vot, boss of the brand, said that he did not know when a Duster of this type would arrive, and we believe him. Because it’s much too early.
The firm obviously cannot escape the switch to all-electric, planned for 2035 in Europe. And Denis Le Vot clearly suggests that Dacia is thinking about it. But the Romanian manufacturer will take its time, especially since it is part of a strategy of complementarity within the group. The Renault brand will become 100% electric quite quickly, by 2030.
Faced with the electric Citroën C3, what remains for the Dacia Spring?
For those who want gasoline, Dacia will therefore maintain a thermal offer for as long as possible. The boss even emphasizes that when the fourth generation of the Duster is launched, around 2031, there will still be enough demand for the model to remain mainly thermal.
The Duster 3, which will be in dealerships in spring 2024, should therefore skip electric. The 4 should still be there, next to the thermal, to ensure the transition. The advantage for Dacia is that the cost of electric vehicles will then be much lower, and if all goes well, it will be equivalent to that of thermal vehicles.
For the moment, on the electric market, Dacia is content with the Spring. This will be restyled in 2024. Then around 2028 it will offer an electric Sandero, derived from the next generation of the city car. This car will benefit from the base of the new R5, which will have already been depreciated for a few years.
The distant electric Duster should probably also use this platform.
