Nio wants to cover the entire spectrum of electric vehicle activity. It therefore intends to separate its battery production entity, to sell them to other manufacturers.
Nio has already explained that it wants to control the value chain of connected and autonomous vehicles from A to Z, from its own electronic chips to the end user’s phone. This aspect mainly covers elements that affect customer use.
But Nio also has ambitions vis-à-vis other manufacturers. It has already proven this with its recent agreements with Changan and Geely on sharing battery swapping technology. Already producing its own exchange stations or charging terminals, Nio will soon assemble its batteries.
The ambition announced in 2022 will come to fruition next year, with the arrival of the first model from the Alps brand. This will launch the third generation of platform, but also new batteries with a voltage of 800 volts, designed and produced in-house. They will use cylindrical cells in 4680 format, and the factory located in Anhui province has an initial capacity of 40 GWh.
No doubt satisfied with the performance of its batteries, Nio is now considering making it a new activity in its own right. It could create an independent company which should sell its batteries to other manufacturers. An independent company which will also be able to welcome new investors and relieve Nio’s finances.
