Parking in spaces reserved for the disabled is highly regulated. Find out the rules to know and the penalties.
Recognizable thanks to specific signage and their blue color, spaces reserved for the disabled are generally installed near store entrances and are wider, to allow the passage of a wheelchair. Very supervised, their use is only dedicated to people with reduced mobility benefiting from the CMI card (Inclusion Mobility Card) or the European parking card for disabled people, reserved for war invalids. In both cases, it must be affixed to the windshield, so that the vehicle is quickly identified as carrying a disabled person and therefore having the right to park in the reserved spaces. In the event of a ticket due to the absence of a card, it will indeed be impossible to contest the fine, even in the event of loss or theft.
Disabled parking space: can we park there as an accompanying person?
Note that it is quite possible to park on a disabled place if you are accompanying a person with reduced mobility, even if you are completely able-bodied on your side. Once again, all you have to do is simply highlight the CMI on the windshield in order to park in peace in a reserved space, free of charge and with no time limit. Be careful, because parking in a disabled space without the card holder exposes you to the same penalties as if you did not have the card. Be careful to show the original of the card, and not a simple copy.
Can pregnant women park there?
If this could be tempting, especially for women at the end of pregnancy, it is strictly forbidden to park in a place reserved for the disabled when you are pregnant. However, a bill tabled at the beginning of the year by a member of Parliament Les Républicains proposes to authorize parking for women who are pregnant for more than six months, and this until the end. According to Frédérique Meunier, at the origin of this idea “ there is a real concern about parking for pregnant women, all the more so in town centers, when the spaces for disabled people are often empty ”. While expectant mothers could benefit from a provisional CMI card, they would not, on the other hand, be exempt from the compulsory payment.

Considered as inconvenient parking according to thearticle R417-11 of the Highway Code, parking on a disabled place without being in possession of the IJC is obviously reprehensible by law. Offenders are in fact exposed to a fixed fine of € 135 which can be increased to € 375. Note that it is also possible to see your car impound or be immobilized, depending on the situation.
