The Czech manufacturer has finally abandoned the Russian base of its Spartan electric 4×4. For the second version, he turned to an Indian partner.
After making itself known with its small electric coupe Luka EV, the Czech craftsman MWM presented the 4×4 Spartan. And to stay in the same retro spirit as its first model, it was decided to use an existing base, and naturally with a retro design: the UAZ Hunter. The Russian 4×4 produced by the UAZ manufacturer based in Lenin’s hometown is a barely updated version of the 469. A model launched in 1971 and often nicknamed “the Chinese Jeep” because of its military origins.
The EQG before its time
But the situation of course makes it impossible to continue the adventure on this proven basis. MWM therefore looked for another rustic off-road model on which to make its own electric model. He finally set his sights on the Indian Force Gurkha. A vehicle launched in 2008, and whose style clearly evokes that of the Mercedes Classe. G.
Force has never hidden it, but has always maintained good relations with the German manufacturer. The Gurkha is still sold in India with the good old Mercedes OM616 diesel engine which appeared in 1973 and was then used by the 240D sedans of the W115 or W123 type… but also by the G Class!

Switched to MWM, the Gurkha therefore becomes Spartan 2.0 and swaps its diesel engine for a 130 kW electric propulsion powered by a 61 kWh battery (57.4 kWh usable). The load reaches 9.6 kW in alternating current, and 90 kW in direct current. MWM advertised 36 minutes for a 20-80% charge.
With its length of only 4116 mm and its short wheelbase of 2400 mm, it falls into the category of crossovers. Moreover, all of the mechanical all-wheel drive is retained with its various axle locks. No dual engine therefore.
With the transition to electric, the
Gurkha Spartan gains an instrumentation screen, LED headlights and a V2L function. However, it is only offered in a two-seater utility version.
