Forget the association of ideas between the Smart brand and small cars. #1 was just the beginning, since the third model will be an even more imposing crossover/SUV. There would be even bigger ones in the boxes.
25 years ago, Mercedes presented the first Smart. Since then, despite various other vehicles, including the Forfour, it is clearly the small two-seater car that remains associated with the brand name. With the launch of #1 and #3, beyond the qualities of these models, we often notice a feeling of incomprehension. And it’s probably not over yet. As evidenced by this prototype of the future vehicle planned by the brand, now half-owned by Geely.
Camouflage hides the styling details, but not the size. This new model, whose internal code is HY11, could be called Smart #5 and it will be a crossover more than 4.60 m long. Some Chinese media refer to it as a minivan, but the imposing hood makes it more of an SUV/Crossover.
Test – Volvo EX30: because the Volvo is good!
Based on the SEA1 platform shared with the Zeekr 001 or the recent Zeekr 007 sedan, it should adopt the latter’s 800 volt architecture, and could therefore also benefit from the famous “Golden Battery”. Enough to offer very fast charging, since these LFP batteries are capable of charging at 4.5 C (more than 450 kW for a 100 kWh battery).
Interior shots show us a large screen extended towards the passenger, a reduced screen facing the driver and a head-up display.
The HY11 will likely be revealed at the Beijing Motor Show in April. Its launch in Europe would take place in the fall. Subsequently, the Smart range could be enriched with a large sedan. By 2027, the range should include six models. As for the idea of a new city car, it seems abandoned.
