Zapping Auto Moto Renault Rafale: first contact with the large SUV cut from the Losange
This year, Volkswagen is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its Golf. The German compact is receiving a restyling for the occasion, made official only a few days ago. We have already been able to discover it in the studio, but Volkswagen seems to want to go further by already offering it its first public outing, and not the least! On the occasion of the Ice Race in Zell am See (Austria), the manufacturer presented its new product in different variants, including one still camouflaged.
An important automotive event at the start of the year for sports and snow sports enthusiasts, the Zell am See Ice Race was this time an opportunity to discover the Golf 8 “phase 2” alongside its predecessors, and in its different versions. versions. On the ice and snow track were the Golf 1 GTI (1975), Golf 4 R32 (2002) and even rally versions of the Golf 1 GTI and Golf 2. The Golf 8 stood out on the ice and snow track. the track with its GTI, eHybrid and GTE versions, but also with the Golf R whose presentation has not yet taken place.
More power on the program?
The Golf 8 R “phase 2” is therefore still slightly camouflaged, with a cover with pixel-style blue accents which evoke the color of the brake calipers. The sports compact should logically receive the same aesthetic developments as the traditional restyled Golf, namely reworked optics, a revised shield or even a new dashboard integrating an imposing central screen of 10.4 or 12.9 inches. On the other hand, we do not yet know what the mechanical developments will be, even if it is possible that the R version increases its power as is the case for the GTI which gains 20 horsepower. As a reminder, the Golf R delivered 320 hp in its traditional version, and up to 333 hp in its “20 Years” variant celebrating the anniversary of the brand’s R sports division.
Johan Kristoffersson, six-time world rallycross champion (including five times with Volkswagen), was one of the lucky ones to get behind the wheel at the event. “All I can say is that even though the Golf R has not yet been revealed to the public, the camouflage hides a real sports car that will appeal to fans of the R brand,” he confided. Response during the official presentation, scheduled for this summer.
