The day the authorities feared has arrived. If farmers have already been demonstrating for several days and demanding “fair remuneration for their work” or even “acceptable conditions for practicing their profession”, it is today that they have chosen to block the major routes leading in particular to Paris with the objective of nothing more and nothing less than to besiege it. As if that were not enough, taxis have joined this first movement demanding a renegotiation of the conditions of remuneration for patient transport. The capital is not the only one affected by these blockages and snail operations. Almost everywhere in France, we are starting to identify difficulties. Let’s take stock together!
Numerous closures around Paris
If the first echoes indicate relative calm, many routes are already blocked. In the Paris region, the A16 was cut this morning at L’Isle-Adam (95). The A1 was closed around midday at Nerville-le-Forêt (95) in the direction of the province. Demonstrations broke out on the A4 in both directions around 2 p.m. Little by little, since this time, the list of blocked routes has actually grown rapidly: since then, the A15 towards Paris has been closed at Mantes-La-Jolie, and the A5A still towards Paris at level of Réau, that of the A10 in both directions at Dourdan or that of the A6 towards Paris at Villabé. Added to this are new demonstrations: on the A6 precisely or on the A1 towards Paris, near Chennevières-lès-Louvres.
And elsewhere ?
Our colleagues from Figaro produced a map providing an overview on a national scale. As we can note, the taxi demonstration is limited to a few rare territories: Paris, it goes without saying, but also Bordeaux, Lille, Lyon and Marseille.
Farmers’ blockades and roadblocks are much more numerous. The Rhône region is particularly affected. The South-West and Brittany are not spared.
The State is mobilizing
Faced with a situation that is becoming explosive, the government is not remaining idle. Emmanuel Macron brought together several ministers at 3:15 p.m. to take “an update on the agricultural situation”, says AFP. Gabriel Attal also plans to meet with the president of the main union in the sector (FNSEA) Arnaud Rousseau at 6 p.m. As for the Minister of Agriculture Marc Fesneau, he promised this morning at the microphone of France 2 that the State would take new measures to satisfy the demands of the demonstrators, within 48 hours.
Unfortunately for the French, the situation should be complicated for a while longer on the roads, this being explained by the fact that the blockages should continue until further notice, i.e. until the farmers have obtained a gain from cause. Finally, it should be noted that the taxi social movement is also renewable.
