The city of Lyon presented, this Tuesday, January 30, its plan to adapt the parking price to the weight of vehicles. The price for “thermal and bulky vehicles” will increase, as was announced since May. A world first, which the city boasts of.
Owners of these vehicles weighing more than 1,525 kg will now have to pay 45 euros. The same will apply to plug-in hybrids weighing more than 1,900 kg and electric ones from 2,100 kg. An increased price, compared to the current €20.
The standard price (thermal from 1,000 to 1,525 kg and plug-in hybrids between 1 and 1.9 tonnes) will now be 30 euros. That is an increase of €10, affecting some of the most accessible cars (like most city cars).
Finally, a rate of 15 euros per month will be applied for owners of electric vehicles weighing less than 2.1 tonnes and thermal vehicles weighing less than one tonne. Suffice to say that few thermal cars will be affected by this.
A system that “thinks about social justice”
This disguised tax therefore affects even the most modest cars. Nothing to prevent the municipality of Lyon from arguing that it is a “system that thinks about social justice”. This by setting up a reduced rate of 15 euros per month for “the poorest families and households”.
The price for visitors to the city will also change for the heaviest vehicles. One hour of parking will cost three euros. This will be tripled for two hours, before increasing to €21 for four hours or €39 for seven hours. And after 10 hours, this will result in a bill of no less than €80. And Valentin Lugenstrass, deputy mayor delegated mobility, explains in detail, at the microphone of BFM Lyon :
“The idea remains the same: simplifying for craftsmen, family and solidarity pricing for residents and incentive pricing based on motorization and weight.”
