Here we are already in 2024. We would even say more: we are almost already in February. So it’s time to detail what awaits you next month. Spoiler alert: unfortunately, good news will be rather rare for motorists.
Should we charge more for SUV parking in Paris?
One of the big events of this month of February is undoubtedly the vote organized by the City of Paris on the 4th at the end of which it will be decided whether or not SUV owners will have to pay more to park their vehicle in Paris. If this therefore only concerns Ile-de-France residents (note, however, that the city of Lyon will be the first to act on the subject), the media coverage of this vote could snowball and lead other cities to do the same, SUVs being increasingly in the sights of certain associations and certain politicians. Everything starts from numerous preconceptions about these supposedly gigantic cars as well as an approximate definition from an NGO that the elected officials of the capital have adopted.
Because, precisely, defining what an SUV is was not an easy task for the authors of this campaign, they are simply proposing to exclude all thermal vehicles weighing more than 1.6 tonnes and all electric models. of more than 2 tonnes, assuming that this is enough to curb “SUV-mania” and ignoring that many fairly common sedans and 7-seater models are also affected. Note for example that the Renault Arkana appearing in the main illustration of the article linked to this subject on the Paris City Hall website (and of this article) and clearly incriminated weighs “only” 1,435 kg in its least favorable configuration … equipped with a hybrid engine which effectively reduces consumption and CO2 emissions.
Even if it is true in most cases that an SUV is larger and heavier than the model in the same segment from which it often derives (this is the case for example of a Peugeot 3008 compared to a 308) , it is to forget as we pointed out in a recent article – that a buyer does not hesitate between an SUV and a sedan of the same category but with a sedan of the higher category.
In a recent press release, the 40 million motorists association took the example of the Renault Captur (segment B, that of urban vehicles, 4.22 m long, 1.57 m high and 1.79 m wide). large) facing the Megane (segment C, that of medium-sized vehicles, 4.35 m long, 1.44 m high and 1.81 m wide), two models very common on our roads. The first offers as much space as the second in a more compact format. We could cite examples of this kind in spades (Citroën C5 Aircross vs C5 X, Toyota Yaris Cross vs Corolla, VW T-Roc vs Golf, etc.).
Rising prices in certain sectors
Who says February says increase in toll prices. The year 2024 is no exception to the rule. However, let us be reassured (a little), the increase is not as strong as hoped. The State has won its standoff with the motorway concession companies and it will be necessary to count on an increase of 3% on average, less than inflation. Price details in our recent article on this subject.
Another increase to which we have become accustomed in recent times and for which it should not have been a habit, is that of electricity prices. If the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire had certified a few months ago that there would be no increase, it was decided otherwise as the month of February approached. The pain could not be more… painful with 9.8% more on average on peak/off-peak rates.
This is not good news for owners of 100% electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles. A priori, however, this should not make recharging at home less advantageous than filling up with gasoline, but the gap could be dangerously reduced with these successive increases…
Finally something new about the bonus?
Finally, we end this overview of the changes expected for the month of February with a possible announcement on the bonus on February 1, as suggested by the Mobilians union, information that we shared with you a few days ago. That the government is taking so long to share the details of the system, as far as I can remember, has never happened in the past. Because it would be expected that the famous rental of a low-cost electric car would not ultimately be limited to 20,000 or 25,000 files and because the envelope dedicated to purchasing aid also including the bonus and the conversion bonus is not extendable (each leasing contract costs the State €13,000), it could be that the boost will be seriously reduced in 2024. Unless the government finally decides to use the entire 1.5 billion euros only for the electric leasing system. The answers very soon. Well, we hope so!
