Lewis Hamilton’s possible move to Ferrari has been the subject of numerous rumors in recent years. Last spring, they skyrocketed following a telephone call between John Elkann, Ferrari administrator, and the British driver, whose contract with Mercedes expired at the end of the year.
However, on August 31, this possibility was put on the shelf, when the announcement of Lewis Hamilton’s extension with the star team for several seasons, without specifying the number. Thus, his new contract was to cover at least two additional years, i.e. until 2025 inclusive.
The mystery of the second year of contract with Mercedes
That said, uncertainty hovers again over the terms of this contract, since an indiscretion published this Thursday by the Italian site formu1a.uno, indicating that the possibility that Lewis Hamilton could join Ferrari next year would be real and that an announcement to this effect could come in the coming days. A priori, the second year of the contract resulting from last summer’s extension would be optional, meaning that the seven-time world champion could leave Mercedes at the end of the saison 2024.
Amid discussions over a future transfer, Lewis Hamilton is said to have remained in close contact with Frederic Vasseur, the director of the Scuderia, whom he worked with successfully almost 20 years ago. Together, they had won two titles in quick succession within two F1 access disciplines, in F3 Euro Series in 2005 and in GP2 in 2006.
Lewis Hamilton, teammate of Charles Leclerc from 2025?
Above all, to date, one of the two seats at Ferrari is free for the 2025 season, Carlos Sainz’s current contract coming to an end at the end of this year. The Spaniard’s contractual situation has not been clarified, unlike that of his teammate Charles Leclerc.
On January 25, Scuderia Ferrari announced the contract extension of the Monegasque beyond the 2024 season, without giving details of its duration. Therefore, depending on the contractual terms of each, the door seems open to the formation of a duo composed of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari from the 2025 season.
According to @formu1a__unoif Ferrari has not yet renewed Carlos Sainz’s contract, it would be to try to sign Lewis Hamilton!
