Volkswagen wanted to mark the birth of its range of electric vehicles with a whole new family of names, ID. This is because during the launch of this strategy, then the presentation of the first concepts and the first vehicles, the German manufacturer wanted to make people forget about Dieselgate… The IDs therefore had to show a whole new, more virtuous face of the brand.
But with the proliferation of electric models, their rise in power and the announced disappearance of thermal vehicles, Volkswagen finally realized that this choice de facto condemned its historical names established in the minds of customers, such as Polo, Golf, Passat , Tiguan…

For several months already, on the Wolfsburg side, we have been sending a message: these names will indeed have a following in the electrical world. And in particular the Golf, pillar of the brand. The return of the e-Golf is thus confirmed for the ninth generation. The delay taken by the SSP platform means that it will not see the light of day before 2028. The icing on the cake, this Golf 9 could also mark the return of the Golf Cabriolet.
This decision is not without consequences for another model: the ID.3. After hesitating about the future of the first ID, with a possible positioning more typical of a Golf Plus-style minivan, the choice seems made. The ID.3 will simply give way to the electric Golf. Or the ID.Golf? Yes, because at the same time, Volkswagen does not seem to want to abandon the signature of its electric models. A situation that can still evolve. Since ultimately, after 2026, all of the brand’s new models will be electric…
