In this toy box for older children, rare and sometimes priceless models rub shoulders with real popular icons to the delight of visitors of all ages. To take advantage of this craze, today’s builders are taking over places to tell their stories. This is the case of Skoda, where we prove that the Czech brand also has a rich heritage.
Of course, we don’t forget to present the current range because these are the ones that are selling these days. Precisely, on the diamond brand’s stand, it’s the hot news that is highlighted: the Rafale. To pay tribute to him, Renault is exhibiting on its stand the famous plane from the 1930s, signed Caudron, which gave it its name.
Among the manufacturers still in activity, some take advantage of Rétromobile to celebrate anniversaries, some of which are worth the detour! This is the case of Porsche which celebrates the 50th anniversary of the 911 Turbo (type 930). On the German brand’s stand sits a superb example from 1974.
Another unmissable anniversary this year at Rétromobile is the half-century anniversary of one of the most famous compact sedans: the Golf! In the same space, 8 generations of the iconic German woman coexist. We have a crush on the V6 version of the Golf 4 displayed in a version in a remarkable state of conservation.
Since we have prepared the party favors, we continue the celebrations with the Mercedes SL anniversary! No modern iteration of the famous roadster on the stand of the brand with the star, priority is given to these superb grandmothers who are celebrating their 70th birthday. It is also an opportunity to launch the manufacturer’s heritage department, which will now be responsible for restoring and selling historic models directly in its network. At Rétromobile, 3 of the 4 models on display are for sale. The gray 300 SL Roadster, in its original form, is priced at 1.2 million euros while the restored models ask for 1.8 million euros.
Legends for sale
Of course, the most prestigious models are intended for the wealthiest clients. But as the saying goes: just because you’re on a diet doesn’t mean you can’t look at the menu! At resellers, rare and sometimes priceless models coexist. Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari F40, Testarossa, racing models with heavy track records or even modern exotic hypercars are often sold at crazy prices.
If you have the means or if, quite simply, you want to get up close and personal with real pieces of history, it’s like every year at Artcurial, the famous auction house that you have to go to. Coming from the same collection, BMW 850 CSI, Z1 (with 100 km on the clock!) or even a brand new road M1 attract the attention of youngtimer lovers. Of course, the highlight of the show at Artcurial is the fully restored Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder long chassis, estimated at more than 8 million euros.
Among the legends that Rétromobile welcomes, we discovered a truly rare bird on the Motul stand: the legendary Yellowbird, the original, accompanied during our visit by its famous parent Aloïs Ruf (find his interview in our video).
In addition to the anniversaries and priceless treasures that litter its aisles, the Rétromobile show also hosts superb exhibitions whose themes change every year. For this 2024 edition, it is the manufacturer MG which takes the spotlight. On the huge stand of the British brand which recently passed under the Chinese flag, we discover the most beautiful pieces which have marked the history of this legendary brand. In the blink of an eye, the all-new Cyberster is positioned next to its ancestor the famous TR3.
Finally, the other exhibition not to be missed at Rétromobile this year is dedicated to the most legendary cars and motorcycles to have participated in the Paris-Dakar. Favorite for the prototype based on the shortened DS 23 which competed in 1981, but also for the Porsche 959 rally-raid developing no less than 400 horsepower, of which the two models entered came 1st and 2nd in 1986. The prize goes to the Peugeot 405 T16, which succeeded the legendary 205 T16 in the mid-1980s, and which distinguished itself in 1989 in the hands of Ari Vatanen.
Of course, this year Rétromobile pays tribute to René Metge who left us a few months ago, by honoring the Nissan X-Trail with which he participated in the Dakar in 2002 alongside Johnny Halliday.
To sum up
Like every year, Porte de Versailles undoubtedly hosts one of the most beautiful events of the year for classic cars and motorcycles. To not miss anything from this 2024 edition, follow the guide!
