Zapping Two Wheels Auto Moto Honda Transalp 2023 test: the benchmark trail finally back?
Urban mobility at BMW Motorrad essentially involves electric motors. To make things easier, the German manufacturer is playing on the offbeat side. After a futuristic CE 04, here is the CE 02, equivalent to 50 and 125 cm3, completely fun.
For several years, BMW Motorrad has taken on new challenges, and that of urban mobility is a major one. Against all expectations, the German manufacturer has managed to do well. Alongside the GS, RNineT and other S1000RR, we now find a range of vehicles with an urban vocation and, what’s more, totally electric. After the CE 04, futuristic as can be, here is the CE 02, a totally offbeat vehicle that you might think came straight from Venice Beach. This scooter, equivalent to 50 cm3 and 125 cm3, plays the fun card with its mixing look beach cruiser et mountain bike. The designers admitted to being inspired by all underground urban culture, from board sports to Parkour. They also call their scooter the eParkourer. Not surprising when we know their target, young urbanites, but also owners of the brand’s cars looking for a nice and pretty vehicle, among others.

The size of this scooter leaves no doubt, it is indeed a two-wheeler dedicated to pleasure rather than a pure utility vehicle. No trunk, but the possibility of attaching a side bag, no protection except a small decorative wind screen as an option, solid rims for the look, but without the possibility of attaching an anti-theft device except to the front disc, even no color for the basic version!
And yet, this little CE 02 makes you want it. Starting with the beauty of its design. The central battery-motor block blends into the mass. It is topped by a long, thin saddle which starts its journey high up like an openwork tank and ends with two passenger handles. The handlebars, quite high and wide, overlook the imposing visible fork on which an LED front light is attached.
A small 3.5-inch TFT screen acts as a counter, displaying speed, charge, chosen mode and autonomy. The latter can be optionally combined with a smartphone with a dedicated socket, particularly for navigation, and managed from the easy-to-access controls. At the rear, no fuss, a monoshock and a swinging arm, as well as the wheel driven by a belt and topped with a wrap-around mudguard. The only prerogative: efficiency.

When you climb on the CE 02, you quickly understand that the concept is pushed to its climax. The scooter has a Keyless system, so you start the little toy with a transponder in your pocket. Very easy to use in that it doesn’t have any crazy functions other than reverse gear, it starts like clockwork once “ready” is indicated on the small dashboard. There are no multiple functions either, you can opt for the modes Flow or Surf for a more or less nervous performance of the engine.
The high-end version, called Highline, which we benefited from during our tests in Lisbon, is equipped with Flash mode, much more responsive and a little more demanding. If it is offered in a 4 kW version, i.e. an AM equivalent accessible from 14 years old with the BSR, it is the 11 kW version, equivalent to 125, that we tried in Portugal.
From the first laps of the wheel, we quickly understood that we were going to have to seriously chew our brakes to not let ourselves get carried away while driving. Responsive and with good reach up to 100 km/h at peak, the CE 02 quickly gives a feeling of confidence. It is lively, very well balanced in that the engine is located in the center and not at the rear wheel. Thanks to its wide and high handlebars, it allows you to feel like you are on a mountain bike. Both adults and children will easily find their position, on the one hand thanks to a long flat saddle, and on the other hand thanks to the front and central footrests of your choice.
The very low center of gravity allows for quick angle changes, ideal for weaving through traffic. Braking at the front is powerful with minimally intrusive ABS, while at the rear, it’s rough, effective, and without assistance, skidding is guaranteed! Despite everything, this toy has traction control which quickly shows its interest as the torque of 55 Nm is brutal in Flash mode.

Like any nice and fun vehicle, the CE 02 neglects practical aspects. Forget comfort, its saddle is very thin and its suspension relatively firm despite possible adjustment of the preload at the rear. Regarding charging and autonomy, it should be noted that the battery is not removable, according to the manufacturer for approval reasons. This being said, only one strap holds the whole thing together.
In version 125, the CE 02 has a double battery pack for a total capacity of 3.92 kWh and a range of 90 km, compared to around fifty km for the equivalent 50 and its single 1.96 kWh battery . During our test of the 11 kW version, the range was instead around 75 km despite a small charge recovery with each deceleration. A little limited in that it takes almost 3 hours (2h40) for a charge from 20 to 80% with the 900 W charger supplied as standard.
The version Highline It has a 1.5 kW charger. It’s a bit slow for a vehicle that is certainly stylish and trendy, but also offered at a rather high price.
With a base price of 7,750 euros for the 4 kW version and 8,750 euros for the 125 A1 equivalent, that makes the toy quite expensive. Especially since you have to add 890 euros to afford the pack Highline which notably benefits from heated handles. The CE 02 is therefore, like its big brother CE 04, reserved for a rather wealthy clientele, but given the success of the latter, we wonder if it is really a handicap.
