Nio will launch a new version of its ET5 electric sedan, with a 150 kWh battery. It was the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology which revealed it in its documents.
Until now, the Nio ET5 and ET5 Touring included a 75 kWh battery as standard. The Chinese manufacturer offered a larger 100 kWh battery as an option. Soon the car will be available with a 150 kWh semi-solid battery produced by WeLion.
According to WeLion, the battery has a density of 360 Wh/kg. According to information from the Chinese Ministry of Industry, the weight of the battery is 575 kg. This is 20 kilos more than Nio’s 100 kWh battery.
At the end of 2023, Nio equipped an ET7 with a 150 kWh battery to set a record. Nio founder William Li and a co-pilot were on board. The car achieved a range of 1044 km with 3% battery capacity remaining.
The 14 hours of driving were broadcast live. The announcement of this semi-solid battery dates back to Nio Day 2020, in January 2021. Three years later, Nio indicates that deliveries will begin in April 2024.
More than two tonnes and a high price
With this 150 kWh battery, the range according to the Chinese CLTC approval cycle (less severe than WLTP) is 1055 km. As for the station wagon (touring) version, the range will be slightly lower, with 1010 km.
The weight of the car equipped with the new battery is 2214 kg for the sedan and 2254 kg for the station wagon, enough to put them in the SUV category in Paris!
Nio will also offer this 150 kWh battery on its other models. The ES6 and ES7 will reach 930 kilometers, the EC6 and EC7 will be around 940 km and the ES8 will be limited to 900 km. It is logical that SUVs are less well positioned on this subject. However, the 150 kWh battery should only be available for rental, due to a high price.
