In just five years, BYD has gone from being a second-rate Chinese manufacturer to an international star and the largest producer of electrified vehicles in the world. The popularity of its models is pushing it to increase the number of new products in 2024. At the risk of making its range incomprehensible?
In 2022 then 2023, BYD saw its financial resources literally explode. First of all, its sales skyrocketed. In 2019, BYD was considered a minor player in the market, with just 450,000 sales. In 2023, it passed the three million mark… But that’s not all, since the group has opened its battery production activity to other manufacturers. We find the latter on board Tesla, Toyota, FAW and soon Mercedes vehicles… As a bonus, BYD displays excellent profitability, thanks to the in-house production of numerous components, not only linked to the electric propulsion of its vehicles.
Last year, the Chinese manufacturer increased its launches, under its brand, but also with the creation of new entities such as Yangwang or Fang Cheng Bao. This intense activity will continue in 2024. In China, but not only.
More than ten new models
Since we are in the period of Lunar New Year celebrations, the news is quite calm. But serious things will begin in April at the Beijing show with the presentation of the Sea Lion 07. Seen at the Guangzhou show last November in prototype form, this new model marks the birth of a new series. It will in fact be followed later in the year by the Sea Lion 05 and Sea Lion 06, but also the Sea Lion DM-i plug-in hybrid.
For the future, there are so many new features that it becomes difficult to find your way around. Family Destroyeralthough abandoned when the Destroyer 07 became Seal DM-i, should see the arrival of the Destroyer 06 and Destroyer 05. Models which will only be offered with plug-in hybrid engines.
In the family Seal the Seal 06 and Seal S are planned, while the current model should adopt the name Seal 07 during an annual update.
Test – BYD Seal Excellence AWD: the Tesla Model 3 has reason to worry
BYD doesn’t forget its range either Dynasty, distributed in a specific network. After the small SUV Yuan Up, an updated version of the Song Pro should arrive, then a new generation of the Song Plus. The latter is none other than the Seal U sold in Europe. The Seal U could therefore have a particularly short career since it was presented last September at the Munich show.
On this occasion, BYD could take the opportunity to clean up its Song family (Song Pro, Song Plus, Song Max, Song L). It is indeed the name of a Chinese dynasty, but Song Plus is curiously distributed in the “Ocean” network.
Note that the names of Sea Star and Coral are also mentioned to complete the list of marine animals (Seagull, Dolphin, Seal, Sea Lion).
And for other brands, BYD also has new products in the pipeline. We have already seen that of Yangwang, the U7 sedan. At Fang Cheng Bao, the Bao 5 will be joined by the small Bao 3 and the large Bao 7. At Denza, the next novelty will undoubtedly be for 2025, it will be a large sedan.
China and beyond
These numerous product launches are accompanied by an all-out international conquest campaign: South America, Central America, Asia, Europe, Australia, Japan… A conquest completed by the installation of local factories: Hungary, Thailand, Brazil . BYD is also considering factories in Mexico and India.
And in Europe?
The European program will be simpler. While the Seal U is arriving, the manufacturer will launch the Sea Lion 07 in the coming months, and probably later in the year the small crossover Yuan Up (under another name). At the end of the year, it will be little Seagull’s turn. Its European launch could, however, be postponed to 2025. It is indeed very successful on its national market, which BYD intends to favor.
