A 19-year-old hacker claims to have managed to take control of 25 Tesla in 13 different countries. He now works in collaboration with the brand.
Now ultra-connected, cars are increasingly affected by the risks of piracy. This is particularly the case at Tesla, which seems to be of particular interest to hackers, while it is possible to control the vast majority of features of the brand’s models via a mobile application. We remember in particular that in May 2021, two engineers had managed to hack a Tesla Model X with a drone and were then able to unlock the doors and change the position of the seats, without being able to take control of the car. It still seems possible, as a young hacker proved.
A benevolent hacker
Only 19 years old, David Colombo claims to have succeeded in controlling no less than 25 Tesla in 13 countries around the world. Without revealing in detail his modus operandi, the young hacker underlines in a series of tweets that he was able to find a loophole in the software from the car, allowing it to open doors and windows remotely, but not only. Indeed, and this is even more worrying, he also claims to have been able to start the vehicle and deactivate all the security systems. He would also be able to tell if the driver is inside and he could turn up the music and turn on the lights.
Fortunately well-intentioned, the young American announced on Twitter that he was in contact with the Tesla teams and that he was working with them, in order to solve the problem. It highlights the danger to drivers and other motorists if a hacker takes control of vehicles with bad intentions.
