According to the latest reports from the FIA, the investigation into the Abu Dhabi final has been open since Wednesday morning and is expected to conclude in early February. Here’s what we know.
the terrible final in Abu Dhabi is still being talked about, a month after the facts. The race marshals had decided to bring in the safety car at the end of the race after theNicholas Latifi accident (driver for Williams F1). This decision allowed Red Bull et Max Verstappen to put on new soft tires facing Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes which had then remained in hard and worn rubbers. The Dutchman had finally taken the best on the seven-time world champion on the last lap of the last race, in an ultra tense context.
This decision had finally been finger pointing in many ways by paddock personalities and fans via social media. Since this famous result, we retain in particular the reaction of the clan Mercedes which had lodged a complaint many times and had not shown up for the awards gala. Including their star, who has remained silent since… And suggests that his future is uncertain in the discipline.
However, it was only a month later, when all the tensions seemed to have subsided, that the FIA decides to finally open the investigation to clarify the situation and not repeat the same thing in the future. The FIA promised that “any significant feedback and conclusions identified would be made before the start of the 2022 season” and the next meeting of the World Motor Sport Council on February 3 would be the deadline.
This 2021 season resulted in particular from a general dissatisfaction of the teams regarding the application of the regulations by the FIA, and particularly since the death of Charlie Whiting -former F1 race director-. One reorganization of the administrative structure of the FIA was finally done. Michael Masi and Nicholas Tombazis have been replaced by Peter Bayer at the level of responsibility for issues relating to single-seaters. But the two men also see their main positions at the head of the current race management of the Formula 1 be threatened.
It is therefore a game of musical chairs that is brewing in the hierarchy of the FIA, which is trying somehow to find the perfect environment to apply strict regulations and respect the “Let them race” promotion movement.
