While Road Safety unveils its accident rate report for 2020, it points out that the number of major speeding offenses has literally exploded.
Like every year, the Road safety publishes its final report on road accidents for the past year, with a slight lag, however. At the start of 2022, these are the figures of 2020 that have just been unveiled, and these are quite interesting. Indeed, they relate to a very special year, marked by the arrival of the Covid-19 and the various measures, having given rise to no less than two confinements. And that logically had a strong impact on road traffic, and therefore accidents. These have indeed fallen very sharply in 2020, while 2,780 people lost their lives on the roads of France, a decrease of 21% compared to 2019.
Speeding on the rise
Overall, all the indicators were down, with the number of accidents which had then fallen by 19%, or a total of 45,121 throughout the territory. While overall there have been fewer deaths and injuries on French roads, across all road networks, from towns to motorways, another trend has emerged: excessive speeding. These indeed exploded in 2020, and in particular during the various confinements. In fact, speeding over 50 km/h detected by radars increased by 66.2% compared to 2019.
In addition, more than 25,897 arrests by the police took place in 2020 for this type of offence, compared to 18,044 the previous year. Overall, the French drove much faster, while 13.3 million speeding tickets were recorded in one year, then equivalent to 11.4 million points lost.
