The rotary engine soon back at Mazda?

Mazda has just filed a patent for a unique coupe equipped with a rotary engine. Will it see the light of day soon? The mystery remains intact.

What enthusiast does not know the rotary engine ? Also known as the Wankel engine, named after its inventor, this type of mechanism differs from conventional engines by its revolutionary design, which reduces friction and vibration, although to the detriment of fuel consumption. If it was used in many fields, and in particular aeronautics, it was in the automotive industry that it had its heyday, notably at Mazda. The firm has indeed widely used this engine, which has become inseparable from the brand over the decades, when it fitted the legendary RX-7 and RX-8, as well as the Mazda 787B which won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1991. .

A big comeback?

Could this engine return to the range? This is what a patent filed recently by the Japanese brand suggests. This then describes a coupe, which would then be equipped with a rotary engine associated with hybridization. This would then be able to power the rear wheels, and would then not only serve as a range extender, unlike the brand’s project for the electric MX-30. Indeed, the firm plans to market a version equipped with a rotary engine, which would allow the SUV to run longer. However, this idea has been put on hold for now.

However, you have to be careful with this information, because a patent filing does not mean that the manufacturer plans to use it. This will often protect the invention, which can then stay in the bottom of a drawer forever.
